‘Victorian Reality' was a Mixed Reality experience made in collaboration between Powerhouse Museum and the iCinema Centre for Interactive Cinema Research at the University of New South Wales.

It featured 10 objects from the 1850s, chosen for exhibition at Powerhouse Castle Hill, alongside their real life counterparts, in October of 2023. Each object was presented with supporting imagery and information narrated by Powerhouse curator Matthew Connell in order to provide a historical context.

The experience used the newly released hand tracking functionality of the Meta Quest 2 to allow users to interact with scanned museum objects from the Powerhouse Museum's collection. By exploring a framework for exhibiting these objects in a public exhibition context, the experience aimed to facilitate a deeper connection to historical objects that were usually off limits and behind glass.

While initially designed solely for exhibition at Powerhouse Castle Hill, the project was successful enough that it was exhibited twice at Powerhouse Ultimo, as part of Gaming Up Late and later, SXSW Sydney.

I was invited to speak about the project and the process of designing it at several conferences and meet ups, including REMIX Summits, MuseumsNext Conference, and Avante Harde Drive.

I served as Experience Designer and 3D artist on the project, and was responsible for designing the flow of the experience while also scanning and optimizing all the required objects from the museum collection.

I worked closely with Powerhouse Museum curator Dr Nicola Teffer on the production schedule and team management. The team also consisted of Software Engineers, Raphael Formoso and Finn Perry.
